No matter the sport athletes’ bodies are taking a beating every game. It’s been a problem in organized sports for decades, most turn to painful surgery, and opioid drugs. Many have fought for Cannabis and some have even lost their careers over it. Since then we have made some progress and as of 2018, The Anti Doping Agency has allowed athletes to use CBD Oil without THC. The difference being that CBD is non-psychoactive, while THC is the compound that gets the user “high”.
What is CBD, and how can it help?
CBD is extracted from Hemp under .3thc, its one of the many cannabinoids in cannabis, widely known for its benefits without the high.
Hemp products are now used in sports medicine to control pain, decrease inflammation and reduce stress; CBD has also been found to aid in bone, nerve and tissue regeneration, which are particularly relevant and needed remedies in the amateur and professional sports arenas.
Athletes Speak up
Aug 22, 2016, Nick Diaz Vapes CBD at Post Fight Press Conference.
"It's CBD," Diaz said after his majority decision loss to Conor McGregor. "It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It'll make your life a better place." Soon after Diaz faced a UFC anti-doping policy violation.
Cannabis is considered a "specified substance" by the UFC anti-doping policy. In other words, it's not an anabolic or hormonal agent, but it is still prohibited in certain cases, like in-competition. An athlete violating the policy for a specified substance can face a suspension of up to one year.
Years after the violation, Nick Diaz actually help influence the cannabis rule change. It is now completely legal to use CBD at any time before and after fights.
